In a recent press release, a prominent market research firm, Technavio, announced the release of an extremely informative report on the booming Global Desktop as a Service (DaaS), or Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), market and its competitive advantages. Technavio goes further by predicting the market will continue to see strong, sustained growth at a CAGR of +11% through 2021.
How and why is this service growing so fast?
If this burgeoning market is gaining massive traction, one might assume DaaS has pivotal benefits for end-users. One of Technavio’s lead analysts, Abhishek Sharma, agrees by stating, “The global VDI market will see rapid growth during the forecast period because of increased adoption by enterprises that prefer the centralized management of desktop systems as opposed to managing hundreds and thousands of individual systems…This enhances employee productivity and reduces the per-seat cost of enterprises.”
But why?
Flexibility and Agility
Currently, enterprises and their IT needs are growing across the board. Their employees stretch across time zones, their overall sizes are increasing, and they have workflows that cannot be hindered by infrastructure processes. In other words, flexibility and agility are increasingly becoming key.
DaaS addresses these needs by allowing IT managers to operate remotely and in a centralized manner instead of working on individual systems. For example, with DaaS, the manager can seamlessly push software updates organization-wide, problem solve faster, and quickly deploy applications on-demand to any device.
Security
In an old, traditional IT environment, an organization’s security rests with software packages that have to be tirelessly installed on each device by the IT manager.
However, with a DaaS infrastructure, there doesn’t have to be so much trust put in the individual anti-virus software or firewalls. Risk is mitigated in a DaaS environment because all data is stored in a centralized data center and it can be configured so that nothing can be downloaded to an end-point. The data centers themselves are typically secured by stringent measures including security guards, biometric scanners, and continuous digital surveillance and recording. Virtually, the data center is secured by state-of-the-art encryption and firewalls.
Lower CapEx and OpEx
Typically, in a legacy IT scenario, the use of a commercial PC in a traditional compute environment costs $1,150; however, a thin client in a DaaS infrastructure can cost around $700 because it does not require a high-end device.
In addition, the yearly cost of this compute model is cheaper. DaaS can help achieve almost 90% in energy savings when compared to a typical enterprise office environment. This is because thin clients consume a fraction of the energy that traditional PCs do and DaaS can run on underutilized data centers instead of having to purchase additional hardware.
RapidScale’s Foray Into The Market
RapidScale has also observed this shift in IT management preferences and introduced a DaaS product of its own: CloudDesktop. However, RapidScale has not settled with the basic benefits that this compute model offers. It has gone above and beyond by offering superior advantages not offered by other providers. They include but are not limited to:
- Businesses can combine their compute, licensing, upgrades, and management into a monthly charge to reduce their spend and automatically get the industry’s latest technology.
- Data is stored and secured with the industry’s latest protocols, encryption, and procedures, which comply with the most stringent regulations.
- RapidScale’s world-class cloud experts can design and deploy custom dedicated or multi-tenant environments that fit the customers’
- RapidScale’s CloudDesktop comes with 24x7x365 management and customer service to help the end-user properly take advantage of their desktop solution. In particular, RapidScale can take responsibility for patches and updates, end user device management, licensing management, infrastructure monitoring, and deployment of applications. The bottom line is with CloudDesktop, RapidScale management exists to unburden the end-user’s IT department so they can focus on exciting innovations for their organizations.
