Don’t be.
Halloween is a few days away, and that means we’re hearing a lot of scary stories. You may have heard a certain horror story in the business world – the great horror of cloud computing and its various perceived weaknesses.
But is it really all that scary? Here are some reasons why you shouldn’t fear cloud computing:
Zombie-proof disaster recovery.
You may have seen our Halloween post from last year, Preparing for the Zombie Apocalypse, but we’ll reiterate the basics. A great cloud provider will have geographically diverse data centers strong enough to protect from all types of emergency situations, including zombies. These secure, redundant locations ensure that businesses won’t lose data, even in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. Data center security measures should include key card protocols, biometric scanning, interior and exterior surveillance and recording, on-premises guards, secured cages, around-the-clock surveillance monitor access, and more. How can a zombie possibly get through all that?
Security isn’t scary.
You might have heard the terrifying line: “Don’t move to the cloud! All of your data will be at risk!”
Of course in some situations, businesses are right to be wary – but not all cloud solutions are created equal. It’s up to both parties (the business and the provider) to create strong security measures. Security is simply something that has to be addressed, and the same goes for traditional in-house business solutions. It’s important to remember that cloud providers are businesses too, and therefore they put a lot of money into ensuring their clients’ information is secure. They can’t risk their business for anything less. A great cloud provider will offer network security, physical security, and compliance solutions. In most cases, you’ll experience better security with a cloud provider than you ever had in-house.
BOO-st productivity.
Many are frightened that the huge shift to digital business solutions will lead to unproductive employees. However, not only does the cloud tout anywhere, any time access to data and applications, but it is also becoming a hugely important communications network. Authorized users, such as staff members, receive limitless access to company networks and data using any Internet-capable device. This means they can stay constantly connected to their work and to each other, which leads to improved collaboration and higher productivity levels.
So cloud computing – is it a trick, or a treat? We know there are plenty of scary stories out there about cloud computing, but don’t fall under that spell. Cloud computing offers important business benefits, and organizations can prepare themselves for the transition by evaluating their needs and goals, researching cloud providers, and planning the perfect cloud roadmap. And after all, you know what’s more frightening than trying out new technology? Being left in the dust.
